Viral serology is performed both in clinical chemistry and in the clinical virology laboratory. Hepatitis serology is performed on the automated Bayer Centaur which reduces assay time to 15 minutes.
All other serologies including HIV antibody testing are performed in virology.
The sample type is serum in a gold top tube for all assays.
Rapid HIV testing is available for needle sticks and pregnant women of unknown serostatus who present in labor.
